The RMHS Boys Tennis Team, coached by Mr. Matt Williams, is looking forward to another competitive season with the hopes of continuing to improve their skills as well as their overall record.
Last year, the boys went 6-10 in the regular season and were defeated by the highly-seeded Westborough team in the first round of the Division II tournament.
Williams is optimistic for what the season will bring, as many of the boys worked hard in the off-season. He hopes that this year the team will be able to win more matches and progress deeper into the state tournament. He believes that the team’s overall strength has increased this year due the work that some of the newer players have put in. “We have had a lot of guys step up this year,” he said.
One of the main goals that Coach Williams has for the season is to help the boys improve the skills they need to be successful in doubles matches. He hopes to work with them on further developing their lobs, serves, and crosscourt returns.
“My favorite part of coaching is ‘the process’ and seeing players buy-in, and then seeing the results from that buy-in. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it’s both exciting and rewarding as a coach.”
Williams highlights how senior captains Wyatt Picard (‘26), Samuel Hillery (‘26), John Wiggins (‘26), and Lucas Gager (‘26) are all assets to the team and will have a large role in the team’s success throughout the season. Picard will be playing first singles at the start of the season and has worked hard to improve his ball-striking techniques and physical fitness. Hillery will be playing many first doubles matches for the team and has proven to be a role-model and leader on and off the court. Wiggins is a reliable player who was able to pull out one of the team’s largest victories during a match last year. Gager has a formidable forehand and serve that he will be able to use to his advantage.
Williams also mentions how sophomore Dylan Taylor will likely be playing a singles position for the team and is a player who is worth looking out for, especially after making significant improvement in the off-season.
The team will have matches 2-3 times a week until the end of the regular season, with their last match on Monday, May 18.
