On Thursday, November 14, 2024, fourteen student athletes at RMHS formally committed to further their academic and athletic careers at various different colleges and universities.
National Signing Day, held in mid November for most schools, marks the start of an exciting athletic career for prospective student athletes. On this day, high school students and college transfers formally commit to their chosen college or university. According to SportsRecruits.com, student-athletes committing to NCAA Division I and Division II can cement their commitment by signing either a National Letter of Intent (NLI) or an Athletic Aid Agreement, determined by the program they commit to. While there is no such binding commitment offered by Division III schools, many student athletes headed to D3 will sign a “celebratory signing form” on signing day to recognize their move to the world of college athletics.
National Signing Day is widely known as the first opportunity for student-athletes and those who supported them to celebrate their commitment to their future program officially. This day is commemorative for these high school seniors and their families as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
At RMHS, 2 students committed to schools for football: Jack Murphy and Jake Palm. Ten students committed to schools for Lacrosse: Ben Diemer, Ian Leonard, Nate Mulvey, Jack Filipski, Cullen Granara, Joey Castelli, Jimmy Trahan, Molly Trahan, Libby Quinn, and Megan Shanahan. Olivia Bass has committed for Field Hockey and Ava McGonagle has committed for volleyball.
Senior Libby Quinn is excited to play lacrosse at The University of Vermont where she will major in Biological Studies next year. Quinn describes this signing day as a great experience. She says, “It was so fun to see everyone come together and celebrate with friends and family.”
Quinn is an exceptional 3-sport athlete. Along with lacrosse, she also plays Field Hockey and Ice Hockey. She was recognized and awarded captain of all three teams for her admirable leadership and sportsmanship. She was also awarded the Hamilton College Award: given to an outstanding junior student and athlete who has academic excellence, exemplifies impressive leadership qualities and has a strong work ethic and passion excelling in both the classroom and on the athletic field.
Quinn is excited to continue her success on the field and in the classroom at UVM next fall.
Ian Leonard, who is also committed to college for lacrosse, describes his experience on November 14th. “It was nice to see all my friends and all my teammates that were also signing.” Leonard continues, “It was good to have my family come in and to see everyone get recognized for being able to play in college, whatever level it is.”
In addition to his successful athletic skills on the field, Leonard is an accomplished player on the ice in the winter, and has excelled in the classroom all throughout high school.
Leonard looks forward to this spring’s lacrosse season where he will serve as team captain and is excited to play lacrosse at Endicott College next fall.
This event was a moment of celebration for the athletes, their families, and the RMHS community, recognizing their hard work and dedication in both academics and sports.
