Rocket Football Preview: Week 3

Reading Travels to Danvers

Ben Regazzini (’22)

It’s week three of the 2023-2024 high school football season, and with their first 0-2 start since 2011, the Rockets will need a monumental effort to get back on track.

Week one saw a disappointing loss to Melrose. After coming back from a 14-0 deficit, the Rockets found themselves down 21-14 in the game’s waning moments. On the final play, quarterback Jack Murphy (’25) heaved a 41 yard prayer to sophomore receiver, Brady Comenos. Miraculously, the ball found him in the back corner of the endzone. The excitement was short lived, however, as Reading failed to convert the two point conversion. On a positive note, Comenos performed spectacularly in his varsity debut, putting up 106 yards and a touchdown on 4 receptions.

Week two did not see the Rockets bounce back. Instead, it saw a 44-7 loss at the hands of BC High. In the loss, the Rockets put up 126 yards of total offense, with the only score being a 9 yard dump off to D’von Burcy (’25) near the end of the fourth quarter. Both of these losses saw the Rockets beating themselves, with fumbles and wayward snaps prevalent throughout. They have the talent, but in order to right the ship, they’ll need to lock in.

This Friday, Reading will travel to face off against a struggling Danvers team, with an 0-2 record of their own. After dropping games to both Tewksbury Memorial and Salem, the Falcons are also desperately in need of a win. Coming off of a mediocre 5-6 season, Danvers did not seem to undergo any significant improvements. Regardless, both teams have something to prove. It’s time to see who wants it more.
