Officer Michael Davis, the new school resource officer at RMHS, has made it his mission to build meaningful relationships with students and support the youth of Reading.
Officer Davis joined the School Resource Officer program after leaving his previous night shift on the Reading Police Department. After a challenging selection process that included two interviews with police command staff and school officials, he was placed at the high school, where he believes he can have the greatest impact. His goal is to create trust between law enforcement and students, provide guidance, and make sure young people feel valued and supported. Officer Davis is replacing former resource officer Brian Lewis who is now working as a detective for RPD. When asked what advice he would give to Officer Davis, Detective Lewis said, “Don’t be afraid to show your personality to the students.”
Officer Davis really wanted to be a high school resource officer, over middle or elementary, stating that he wanted to “interact with kids who were a little older.” He added, “I just wanted to be able to help the kids in the Reading Public School system. Getting off nights was a bonus, but more importantly, I want to build relationships with the youth and help them in any way I can.” He also shared, “I enjoy being able to get to know the students better, beyond just seeing them in different scenarios. It’s rewarding to connect with them and support them during their school day.”
A big question students and staff had was whether or not Officer Davis would also be getting a comfort dog to replace the beloved Cooper, who is now with Detective Lewis at the police station. Officer Matthew Vatcher, the school resource officer for the middle and elementary schools in Reading said, “He should be getting another dog from the same breeder as Rusty and Cooper sometime by the end of the year. I’m not sure which color, though. But it’d be brand new, probably eight weeks old.”
Through his position, Officer Davis hopes to empower students and positively influence the RMHS community. Students are encouraged to stop by his office on the first floor, right next to guidance.
