With RMHS’s annual Activity Fair happening on Tuesday 10/8, students have started to observe all of the unique opportunities the school’s clubs have to offer.
RMHS offers a large variety of clubs from sports, the arts, volunteering, and extracurricular education. With the advent of the new school year, students have begun to think about joining activities. This year, the RMHS club fair saw over 45 different clubs seeking new members.
Large extracurriculars like the athletic, artistic, and service-oriented groups dominate at RMHS, and it can be difficult for clubs with more niche topics to reach students.
Environmental Club, advised by chemistry teacher Mr. Pancic, is dedicated to improving the environment here in Reading. The main focuses of their club are water and soil quality, wildlife preservation, and forest preservation. They present their efforts and future plans to improve these focuses at competitions observed by judges. Representative members of Environmental Club Ben Houle (‘26) and Eli Brown (‘26) recommended the club for students looking for public speaking experience and volunteer hours. Members of this club also participate in workshops at various colleges, where they tour environmental science research centers. Environmental Club meetings are held at 3:15pm in room 302 every Wednesday.
The Book Club is advised by the RMHS librarian, Mrs. Moylan. In this club, students read diverse literature from a variety of perspectives. They read all genres, including horror, young adult, and fantasy. “We focus on topics like gender, sexuality, family situations, and realistic conflicts,” said club president Jax DiFiore (’25) “With social media, less people are reading books, and we want people to rediscover their love of reading, as well as learn about the experiences of other people to become more well-rounded.” At the end of each year, club members vote on what books they’ll read during the next year. In a partnership with a local store, Whitelam Books, they receive nine different books -one each month- for each person to read. Book Club meets on Thursdays during flex in the Library.
RMHS brings together people of many different interests, so it is no surprise that clubs and student activities are the cornerstones of the community.
