The RMHS Drama Club is putting on a production of “We Will Rock You,” a musical based on the music of the 1970’s rock band Queen on the weekends of November 8th – 17th.
This will be their first of three shows this year, and it is based on the music of the famous British rock band. Mrs. Cunha, the drama club director, selects all three shows per year based on a single common theme. This year’s theme being about the diminishment of art versus science in society. “We Will Rock You” will be directed by Mrs. Cunha, and it stars TJ Korwan (‘25) as Galileo Figaro, and Natalie Medeiros (‘25) as Scaramouche..
This show is inspiring a lot of excitement within the drama community, as it is somewhat dissimilar to musicals that Reading has done in the past. Lead Electrician of the show, Natalie Kiernan (‘25) believes that “We Will Rock You” will attract the attention of many more people than previous musicals. “The music for it is all of just Queen’s songs. I feel like people will like the show a lot more if they already know a lot of the music in it.”
Mrs. Cunha added, “We’re experimenting with different lighting effects to make the show really feel like a rock concert.” These two factors will assist in making “We Will Rock You” an experience that most students have never seen before.
With the show coming up in just a few short weeks, the cast and crew will be dedicating much of their time towards preparing the best performance possible. Kiernan stated, “The weeks leading up to the shows, and the week of the shows, you are there every day.” She also said that these practices and rehearsals often run as late as 10:00 p.m. some days. On the weekends before the shows, the crew members frequently put in 8 hour days.
This show has also resulted in the appearance and advisory of Mr. William Endslow, who the Performing Arts Center is named after. He has been in the school every day helping out to ensure that the actors and crew deliver the best performances possible.
The RMHS drama club is performing “We Will Rock You” a total of six times in the upcoming weekends. The Friday 11/8 and Saturday 11/9 performances will be at 7:30, while the Sunday 11/10 show is at 2:00 in the afternoon. The following weekend is the same, with the Friday 11/15 and Saturday 11/16 shows are at 7:30 again, and their last performance is on Sunday 11/17 at 2:00 p.m.
Tickets are only $5 for students, and can be purchased either online, during school lunch, or at the time of the shows.
