Last Thursday, in the Hawkes Field House, the Athletics Department organized and hosted a club fair to promote student involvement in the numerous clubs at RMHS.
This marks the second year that RMHS has held its club fair. Students from all grade levels come together and browse the various tables set up with club representatives. The Athletic Department currently reports 66 clubs at the high school with around 40 of those clubs participating in the club fair.
The club fair is a great way for the students to get exposed to the various clubs. Kathleen Drummey, the secretary of the athletic director, stated, “I think it is letting all the students, especially freshman and sophomores know what we have, and know that they can just go to a club and go to a meeting and there is no pressure.” Most clubs report having a roster of 10-20 members, but this number may increase after many students began signing up for clubs after seeing them at the club fair.
The appeal in clubs also comes from their freedom and flexibility. Ms. Drummey added, “If it is not for them they don’t have to keep with the club.” Students are able to pursue their various interests while also not making an extensive commitment.
In addition to pursuing various interests, clubs bring students together. Ms. Drummey said, “I think it is a good way for the students to meet other kids and especially other grades; other students that they may not necessarily know from their classes.” Students get to meet people with similar interests, fostering new friends.
The club fair has aided students in finding the right club for them over the past two years, benefitting both the students and the clubs at RMHS. Ms. Drummey shared that about 70% of students are involved in clubs, making them a great way to make friends, explore passions and interests, and become involved in the RMHS community and family.
