DiCostanzo and Lewin Recognized for Pursuit of Excellence
November 14, 2021
“The Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents’ Certificate of Academic Excellence” has been recently awarded to two seniors at RMHS to recognize their high academic achievements and extracurricular commitments over their high school career.
Every year across the state seniors are awarded this certification, with the amount of certifications being proportional to the graduating class size. As indicated by Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents for a graduating class of 251-500 students 2 certificates are awarded. This year in particular, Weston Lewin and Sara DiCostanzo, seniors of the class of 2022, were highlighted for their excellence.
In response to their recognition, Lewin stated, “I feel honored. I’d like to thank my teachers for making my experience at RMHS as wonderful as it was, and for challenging me academically and artistically. It’s unfortunate that I won’t be able to spend any more time in the Reading Public School systems with Superintendent Milaschewski, but I am grateful that he selected me to be a recipient of this award.”
DiCostanzo stated, “I feel super grateful and it feels really nice. I’m really glad that I’m in good company as people know Weston is also a really great kid and person. I am just very grateful and honored to be recognized in such a way. I feel like there are so many other students at the school who also deserve an award and there are so many good applicants to pick from, but I appreciate being a recipient of this award.”
As to how Lewin and DiConstanzo were the selected recipients, it is the result of multiple factors. As described by the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents the award will be given to high school students who have distinguished themselves in the pursuit of excellence during their high school careers.” In addition, the students must have a high three year cumulative average, rank in class, and be personally selected by the superintendent, with the superintendent having leeway among the top 5% for their personal selection.
In a personal email from Superintendent Milaschewski, he stated, “To make the decision for RMHS, I met with the RMHS Guidance Department to help discuss seniors who met this criteria and then ultimately select two recipients. This was an extremely difficult decision because there were so many RMHS students who met the criteria for this award and who have been such strong contributors to the RMHS community. Throughout the year, there will be other awards to recognize our RMHS seniors, so we look forward to celebrating and honoring students for all of their amazing accomplishments.”
