Art Club Welcomes All
October 2, 2021
On Wednesday, September 29, 2021, the RMHS Art Club had its very first meeting of the year, which had a significantly increased number of members compared to the previous COVID-impacted year.
Due to COVID, many clubs at RMHS either went virtual or were canceled. Of course, this included the RMHS Art Club, the club where every student is able to express their love of art. Last year club meetings were mostly held over Zoom to practice safety due to COVID-19. Luckily, this school year where students are all in-person, Art Club can finally be enjoyed in person.
Art Club advisor, Ms. Gilbert reminds students that all are welcome. “Students come to the Art Club because it’s a great way to connect with the larger art community in RMHS. You would come to Art Club if you want to be involved in community projects or global projects. Students can drop in as they want to join certain projects by keeping their eyes on the Remind, or they can come every week.” The Remind code is @rmhsart22 which will include updates on art projects and reminders for club meetings.
Members will have their weekly meetings every Wednesday from 3:15 to 4:00 pm in room 226. There will be snacks provided each week for the club members to enjoy and relax while creating art. Please keep in mind that this club is very flexible, so there’s no need to worry if you’re also involved in other extracurriculars like sports after school. Everyone is welcome to join any time no matter who you are, or where your artistic ability lies.
This year, the Art Club President, Tiffany Nguyen sparked a new idea to enhance the Art Club. She decided that it would be fun to add “Monthly Art Prompts/Challenges” for the members to express themselves and be creative. Members can work on their Monthly Art Prompts/Challenges throughout the month and at the last meeting of the month, they will have an opportunity to share their art with the whole club. She shares, “I’ve been deterred from starting any art projects because of a lack of ideas/inspiration, and creative prompts help a lot with giving me motivation to draw something new. I wanted to give other people who may struggle with getting inspiration a place to start their art.”
There are many reasons why students join the Art Club. For instance, students have a lot of freedom when it comes to art materials, drawing style, and who to create art with. There’s no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to art. Ms. Gilbert shares, “Students are welcome to work independently on solo projects, or they can work collectively on a project, like the mural project where we’re trying to just redo some of the old murals that have been here.”
As of now a new fresh year, Ms. Gilbert shares, “It’s really great to have students in person and really work collaboratively. I feel like Art Club is all about that. So last year even when we were virtual, we did come in to create a mural for the community to welcome back students and it was really exciting just to have students in person again. It reminded me of how much energy students provide to our teaching and learning spaces. Finally being in a real space together feels different. While I am glad the art club continued virtually last year, it was a relief to have students back in person.”
Even with COVID, nothing can stop the members of the Art Club from being artistic. The Art Club really provides a strong community to anyone that loves art. The Art Club will have its next meeting on Wednesday, October 6th in room 226 at 3:15 pm. Don’t hesitate to join them.
